PZI Vet Cat Insulin Review

Vet's Review (Michael Dym, VMD) "PZU Insulin "

There is not much more of a difficult condition to regulate than diabetes in cats. While for years we have had many fairly effective options in treating diabetes in dogs, with cats the number of effective insulins that truly work have been limited.

Several years ago most of us used PZI insulin with fairly decent success in many felines, and were dismayed when it was taken off the market and found that many of the other insulins out there such as Humulin N, NPH, Humulin L and Lente insulin resulted in very poor regulation in the feline in many cases. That was until Idexx came out with this newer U-40 PZI insulin for cats that has indeed been a godsend in regulating diabetic cats. While some cats can be regulated on once daily use of this insulin, in many cases I have found that twice daily insulin is needed, typically on average between 2 and 3 units once to twice daily, with many cats needing more.

One of the most forgotten components of diabetic management in cats, that along with a wonderful insulin like PZI can make regulation much easier, is a species appropriate diet for our feline friends. Cats by evolution are obligate carnivores(meat eaters), and this is even more important when formulating diets for diabetic cats. Most processed dry kibbles, even many sold by vets across the country, are full of carbohydrates which make regulation more difficult and insulin requirements even higher, as well as leading to dehydration in cats that are already overly thirsty in many cases. .

When cats are placed on proper home made meat based diets or low carb or grain free natural canned foods, these cats do much better than cats on dry kibble. In fact some diabetic cats can be controlled by diet alone. When used in conjunction with an excellent diet, this insulin(which is most closely related to the molecular structure of feline insulin) offers feline guardians a wonderful option in managing their diabetic cats long term. The only down side is that the insulin is fairly expensive, and that at a possible dose of 3 units twice daily, this insulin will last approximately 2.5 months.
However I strongly endorse this product.

For:
Cats

Benefits: • Long duration of action • Beef insulin is closest to cat insulin for most effective results How it works:
Insulin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pancreas. When the body does not produce enough insulin, or when the insulin produced is not effective, it results in diabetes. PZI (Protamine Zinc Insulin) is insulin combined with zinc and protamine (a protein extracted from salmon testes), which slowly releases insulin into your cat’s bodily tissue.

Cautions:
Insulin requires refrigeration. Overnight shipping is required. The vial should be gently rolled to re-suspend the insulin before each use, not shaken. PZI VET insulin should appear uniformly cloudy or milky after re-suspending. Use PZI VET with U-40 syringes only. Use of a syringe other than a U-40 syringe will result in incorrect dosing.
PZI Vet Insulin is manufactured for trusted consistency to help regulate diabetic cats. Injectable 90% beef insulin is the closest to cat insulin for the most effective results.
